I attended the OCC meet for the second time yesterday, after a gap of 6 months. I think this was a much better meeting than the last one I attended (at Ascendas) since the venue was quieter and there were some founding members attending.
The most valuable things for me, personally, were the introductions at the start, and having my question about scaling answered in some detail by Suresh (thanks!).
IMO, there were a few things that could be improved for future meets:
- The discussion on "Implementation vs Ideas" seemed disorganized, and didn't really go anywhere. A moderator who "gives the floor" to someone to make their point, which can then be answered by someone else in turn, would have made for a more productive discussion. Without a moderator, there were a lot of people talking over each other, and there was no development of the idea as the discussion progressed.
- I found the intern website presentation interesting. Perhaps we could always have 30 minutes to an hour dedicated to discussing the product one of the attendees is working on? I understand this will require some advance planning, but these kinds of informal case studies would be valuable.
- The networking part of the meet could have been earlier. Since it was at the end, after close to 2 hours of discussion, I couldn't stay around as long as I would have liked.
Just my thoughts. It would be interesting to hear other people's opinions.
