The framework was selected very carefully.. I compared the following - cakePHP, Drupal, Zend, Symfony.. and picked Drupal due to its maturity, available resources and add ons..it turned out to be a good choice. There are some other frameworks that claim to be complete open source social networking frameworks, but believe me you cant even install some of those successfully.
The functionalities I have right now are - basic networking (search/view profiles), add as buddy, invite friends, feedbacks, comments , forum, resources ( directory of useful website links), blog etc. ..
