Certifications for Start ups

We at Voice Snap are considering having certifiations to add to the market credentials. We are already TM our product offerings. In addition it is my opinion that having certifications adds credibility and stature to the business. This will also add to the value when we are considering venture capital for our business. The key is to decide what will be the best certification for the line of business, cost involved and the time to complete the exercice. If anyone has any previous experience in… Continue

Product Pricing

One of the most common but difficult questions to answer is product pricing. For sometime, all of us selling software as a service would have debated on fixed price, differential pricing, having a walk away price and a margin. I recently read this interesting article in a community I subscribe to and thought will be useful for all the members in this forum.. The article itself is a review of the book "Don't just roll the dice:A usefully short guide to software pricing" by Neil Davidson.Continue

The Stigma of being an Entrepreneur

I am just in a mood to reminisce and been having some maudlin thoughts that I absolutely had to pen! I remember a while ago an elderly gentleman (and a family friend) was pleasantly enquiring about us - how the kids are doing, how is my work and our general well being. When asking about work, he asked if we were still doing our own "stuff" . To his mind people in business were those who did not manage to snag a job. For your talent and creativity you could have become an AVP at TCS by now, he… Continue

Social Media Network and serious business

The onslaught of the social media and networking sites has caught us all in a virtual web where we feel connected only when we chat, send messages not more than 140 characters and generally feel better only when we update our status on these sites. The height of it was when one of my friends (whom I got back in touch after a long time) had to cancel our face to face meeting as he wanted to update his status on facebook and twitter that he has got back in touch with his schoolmate after 17 years!… Continue

If by Rudyard Kipling

This is a poem that I totally love. I realised early on that it is impossible to have a go at it all at once. I just take it one line at a time and count the times when i can live it. PS: it was written by Kipling when he was 31. The lines " if you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two imposters just the same" is written on the wall of the center court of the Wimbeldon. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ If you ca… Continue

Working for a living is a form of enterpreneurship

it took this trip down under for me to start thinking that being employed is also a form of enterpreneurship. there were 2 days of a marathon event we hosted for a client and the preparation took about a week when we all but camped at office. We had our own scripts to chart and the freedom to design 2 days just the way we wanted it. After the initial resistance to freedom, I think we liberated our minds to think and think some more to make an intense 2 days of discussion of numbers, scope, val… Continue

pursuit of happyness

Doing what you like is freedom, liking what you do is happiness read the poster i had as a teenager. I am constatly in discussions with friends who have start ups and have left some lucrative jobs to do their own stuff. Of course I admire their courage and grit. At the same time I wonder if it was a wise move for them. What about their commitment to support their family (my friends were much married and are first generation entrepreneurs, so did not have a large family pool to dip into). My fr… Continue

Shopping!!

For all those who pass out at the mention of shopping, especially, festival shopping this blog is worth a skip! It is intended as an ode to shopping! It is less than a week before Diwali, and I was cursing those stars that kept me Down Under during those formative shopping weeks. I dreamed about the pre Diwali shopping rendevous that means we meander down the lanes of T Nagar, the Mecca of shopping in Chennai and get baptised. I kind of missed those pre - weeks as I was consumed by work. I ru… Continue

Finding that team

Much has been said about the work life balance and how finding that state is a sign of immortality. But I want to highlight here that the perfect balance is a myth and we feel balanced or imbalanced depending on the state at which we are either at the work place or at home. When things are going well at office - we have a great team, a very appreciative and supportive boss, work that challenges and makes the best of our capabilities and we are appriciated all along the way: Sounds like Work Nir… Continue

Why Indian airports are better

I travel frequently and all over the world so I feel I am qualified enought to write on the global airports. And I must conclude Indian airports are way superior to their counterparts. I am not commenting on the cleanliness, appearence and other frills.. but the overall serviceability and the approachability of the staff. 1. if I hear one more person comment that there are too many local languages in India and it is difficult to manage I will dump them at Munchen. In case you are wondering this… Continue

Commercial office space

During my recent office space hunt I realised one important fact - that the commercial space rentals have gone down and if we search carefully can get a good deal on an office space at a rent we can afford and in the location of our preference. We have a great office space now - fairly large and in the heart of the city, but it is a residence where the first floor is let out as a commercial space. I want to move to a more commercial set up. Here are my arguments for the movement: 1. the rent i… Continue

The right sales force for a start up

Often I feel I can never get a sales force for my start up as passionate as ourselves!! But I am starting to realise that I must change my hirig techniques and look for specific attributes in my sales team. But for that I must get some basics right. When going through Dharmesh's article on Startup sales teams (http://onstartups.com/tabid/3339/bid/10155/Building-Startup-Sales-Teams-Tips-For-Founders.aspx) I found that I had the first point right - I was my primary sales team. Sustainability and the start up

As start ups we also have a responsibility to Go Green and be more energy efficient at our work spaces. Go Green and energy conservation are not fad words or concepts for public speaking but a stark reality that when we are immersed in our proposal and sales pitches fail to pay head to. These are not concepts for the large corporates that guzzle up tonnes of electricity and other forms of power a day. It is also for our offices - whether we operate as a home office, a garage , or a simple home… Continue

Business travel

Business takes us oversees!! It is mighty important to plan our trip so that the time and effort to plan that trip - which would in today's scenario be readdy short is really important. Other than the actual meeting it would be a good idea to meet up with other potential clients who may be in the same city we are visiting to make the most of that trip. It could be a level 0 meeting, but who knows one thing may lead to another and we would have had an opportunity to propogate our business at on… Continue

Asynchronous communication - for hospitals

I am reading and researching on publications and theories on why asynchronous communication could end up being more preferred than synchronous communication. One of the very first publications I came across was a research report done by HP in association with Bristol hospitals UK. The long and short of this study shows that, in hospitals: - doctors are disturbed during critical hours when hospital staff try to reach them - nearly 50% of the calls are dropped due to the inability of the doctor… Continue

Why asynchronous communication

Here are some top reasons why Asynchronous communication should be encouraged: - Asynchronous communication encourages time for reflection and reaction to others. - It allows users the ability to work at their own pace and control the pace of information. - There are fewer time restrictions with the possibility of flexible working hours. (Bremer, 1998) - The use of the Internet and the World Wide Web allows users to have access to information at all times. - Interactions can happen at any time… Continue

sales force or venture funding

I am caught in between: whether to focus on streamlining my sales force or focus on gearing up venture funding for my business. One school of thought is to keep it simple and within my control - focus on sales so that the business grows and sustains by itself. The second school of thought urges me to look out for a venture capitalist to fund my business as I am arguably "poised for the next level of growth". I am trying to weigh the merits of each of these schools of thought. By focusing on… Continue
