Like any business a start up also needs to keep track of the sales pursuits that are being followed, the leads that have reached a contract negotiation stage and those that have been successfully closed.
I would go one step further and add that we need to also keep track of those leads that did not materialize successfully as those contacts may help us in someway in the future.
A simple excel template that is easy to fill, is color coded to indicate the various stages in the sales cycle, highlighting the names of the primary contact person, the contact number, the secondary contact person and their number and the level of closure you are in the sales cycle will act as a one page snap shot as you move up the sales cycle.
This will also induce a sense of seriousness - when you put down the names of the sales leads and see for yourself that the hours you spent commuting and in meetings which you somethimes thought were leading you no where, have actually made successful inroads for you and your business. it also highlights areas that you have not made an adequate follow through.
It will also help if you add a brief comment/ note against each pursuit as to the primary reason you were able to clsoe the sale/or the reason that the sale did not happen. This will help fine tune if there was any issue in your sales pitch.
